Take Action

Here you will find information about current legislative attacks against my species

None of these bills have become law yet. SF 632 and HF 649 sit in committee, not voted on. The survey bills, HF 1331 and SF 1848, are still pending as well. But each one signals a push to manage or hunt wolves more forcefully, even while we remain federally protected.

SF 632 — Annual Open Season Matching Wolf Plan

  • What it proposes: Requires the Minnesota DNR to establish an annual wolf hunting season, even while still federally listed, and mandates that the season align with goals in the official Wolf Management Plan. The bill also requires consultation with agriculture and USDA before setting any season.

  • Status: Introduced January 23, 2025. Referred to the Environment, Climate & Legacy Committee. No further action as of now.

HF 1331 / SF 1848 — Mandatory Annual Wolf Population Survey

  • What it proposes: Requires the DNR to conduct a statewide wolf population survey every year, not limited to historic range. It also reinforces quarterly public reporting of wolf deaths and binds wolf management goals to the legislature’s decisions.

  • Authors: HF 1331 introduced in the House by Rep. Isaac Schultz (R) and many others; SF 1848 introduced in the Senate by Sen. Justin Eichorn (R‑District 6). trackbill.com+9MN Revisor's Office+9Bemidji Pioneer+9Wolf Center+5MN Revisor's Office+5trackbill.com+5

  • Status: Both introduced in early 2025 and referred to the appropriate committees. No passage yet.

HF 649 — Annual Open Season Required (House Version)

  • What it proposes: Very similar to SF 632; forces the DNR to issue an annual hunting season regardless of federal status. Companion to SF 632.

  • Built-in: Primary author Rep. John Burkel (R‑District 1A), co-sponsored by Nathan NelsonNatalie Zeleznikar, and others.

  • Status: Introduced February 13, 2025. Sent to the Environment and Natural Resources Finance and Policy Committee. Still pending.
